Tove Jansson’s beloved Moomin characters have been featured on Finnish stamps many times, but this marks the first time their adventures have landed on Christmas stamps.
The Christmas stamps were inspired by Tove Jansson’s story The Fir Tree, which celebrates its 70th anniversary. In the short story, the Moomins awakened from their winter sleep get to take part in Christmas festivities for the very first time. The Fir Tree short story was published in Jansson’s book Tales from Moominvalley.
“In addition to the Fir Tree short story, we were inspired by the novel Moominland Midwinter, published in 1957, in which Moomintroll awakens from his winter sleep and experiences a snowy winter with all its wonders,” says James Zambra, Creative Director at Moomin Characters.
In the domestic vertical no-value indicator stamp, the Moomin characters are amazed at the glow of a big Christmas tree. The domestic no-value indicator stamp Waiting for Christmas will be issued as a 10-stamp sheet.
